Forestry Mulching evolved as a method of removing brush, trees, and unwanted overgrowth while improving erosion control and conserving precious topsoil. Specialized equipment is used to shred, chip, or "mulch" the vegetation and this mulch-like material is spread evenly across the cleared site. Root systems remain in the soil encouraging advantageous microbe growth and mitigating erosion, and the mulch material serves as a fertilizer and soil stabilizer.
A forestry mulcher is a specialized commercial machine which uses a rotary drum equipped with steel chipper tools (teeth) to shred vegetation. It is capable of mulching (grinding) entire standing or downed trees and vegetation leaving the grindings as a "mat" on the forest floor. With this machine, we can efficiently clear land at costs up to half that of hand cutting methods with no hauling or burning that would result from conventional clearing. By using a forestry mulcher, there are less steps involved in the land clearing process including site prep, cutting, felling, hauling the material and site clean-up. Since the forestry mulcher is capable of handling many jobs, it eliminates the need for a bulldozer, excavator, tree shearer, wood chipper/grinder and transport vehicles.
This process is great in application where erosion is a concern. Mulching vegetation leaves the soil structure in place and limits the disturbance of soils. The mulched material can be left in place to act as an erosion barrier and return nutrients back to the soil. The vegetation will eventually decay, and grass can be maintained by mowing.
